明朝的文字獄,發生在開國之初的洪武時期。究其實質,無非新王朝維護中央集權統治過程中矛盾衝突的一種反映形式。後來,之所以愈演愈烈,很大程度上不能不說是開國皇帝朱元璋出身微賤的自卑心理作祟,總懷疑“郁郁乎文哉”的秀才們看不起他,話中有刺。如臣下賀表章奏的“光天下之”、“為世作則”、“作則垂憲”、“睿性生知”等詞,都被硬說是諧“做賊”、“僧知”以諷刺;而“光天下之”’則被認為是諷喻皇帝做過和尚,腦袋當然光亮,於是定為“惡毒攻擊”。謝恩詩中有“金盤蘇合來殊域……自慚無德頌陶唐” ,拆“殊”
