赛鸽运动,在台湾相当普及。各地有不少赛鸽协会,不仅在繁华的大都市里有,许多偏远的乡村也都成立了赛鸽协会。各地的赛鸽协会,每年都经常举办名目繁多的赛鸽比赛。台湾的赛鸽比赛,通常设有丰厚的奖金,加上赛外的赌金,使得这种赛事由单纯的运动项目变成带有赢利性质的竞争。岛内许多人因此趋之若鹜,一时养鸽成风,鸽主不惜重金购进优良鸽种,不吝钱财精心饲养赛鸽,以图在各种赛鸽大赛中争先获胜。一九八六年十二月二十八日,台岛上空乌云满天、寒风阵阵,花莲市南滨公园海滨却一片热闹的景象。由台南县归仁乡赛鸽协会中山支会举办的冬季五关赛的第一关“花莲关”的比赛,将在这里开始。比赛的目的地是高雄市,飞行时间规定为四个小时。一个多级赛鸽组织举办赛鸽比赛,这在台湾是既普通
