他是老一辈民主党派领导人,为民建的创建和发展作出过卓越的贡献。他也是一位杰出的教育家,1938年起与黄炎培等一起,致力于中华职业教育社工作。他为中国共产党领导下的多党合作做出过重要贡献。1949年6月,他出席了在北平召开的新政协筹备会,出任新政协筹备委员会副秘书长。同年9月,出席了中国人民政治协商会议第一届全体会议,出任副秘书长。他从第一届全国人民代表大会开始,连续5届当选为全国人大代表,并担任第一、二届全国人大常委会副秘书长。他还任第七届、第八届全国人大常委会副委员长,是与全国人民代表大会有着深厚渊源的国家领导人之一。
He is the leader of the older generation of democratic parties and has made outstanding contributions to the founding and development of the Democratic Progressive Party. He is also an outstanding educator, with Huang Yanpei and other since 1938, committed to the work of China Vocational Education Society. He made important contributions to the multi-party cooperation under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. In June 1949, he attended the preparatory meeting for the new CPPCC held in Peiping and served as the deputy secretary-general of the Preparatory Committee for the CPPCC. In September the same year, attended the first plenary session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, served as Deputy Secretary-General. He has been elected as the deputies of the National People’s Congress for the fifth consecutive term since the first NPC and has been the deputy secretary-general of the first and second sessions of the NPC. He also served as vice chairman of the Seventh and Eighth NPC Standing Committee and one of the leaders of the state that has deep roots in the National People’s Congress.
