新中国成立后,没有带过兵、打过仗的李克农被授予上将军衔,成为一名从“寂静战场”上走出来的特殊将军。毛泽东在一次接见外宾时说:“李克农是中国的大特务,只不过是共产党的特务。”1962年,李克农病逝,党内军内齐悲。董必武曾赋悼诗:“三十年前事已赊,知君才调擅中华。能谋颇似房仆射,用间差同李左车。”其意思是说,李克农的功绩堪比唐太宗时期的房玄龄,秦汉时期的谋士李左车。美国情报局获悉李克农去世的消息后,欣喜若狂,宣布休假3天,庆贺一位强有力的对手消失了。
