The experimental procedures and methods for observing the phase structure of the alloy by scanning tunneling microscope (STM) are described in details. The preparation method of the sample, the oxidation prevention and adsorption method of the erosion surface, the requirements of the instrument and the main operation methods are described in detail. The austempering microstructure of Fe-1.0 C-4.0 Cr-2.0 Si alloy was observed. It was confirmed that the bainitic ferrite subunits consisted of smaller superlattices with multi-level fine structure. Results This shows that the fine microstructure of the alloy phase can be observed using STM with appropriate surface protection.
