《梦惊西游》的创作目的与较早前的《花月影》相类似,它们都是粤剧改革与演化过程中的先导,都拥有创新的舞台编排,大胆的肢体语言,以及鲜艳夺目的服装造型,在保证原汁原味的粤剧唱腔的前提下,吸引更多平时很少接触戏曲的年轻人。但两者的特征又有区别:《花月影》的情节足讲述清代岭南红船戏班的故事,表达的是一段南国原汁原味的“红豆寄相思”式的思想情感内容;而《梦惊西游》则是借古言今,通过对《西游记》中人物及故事情节的引用、改造,来反映现实生活。如果说《花月影》是通过用浓墨重彩的手法突出了“唯美”的效果取得了成功,那《梦惊西游》就是以巧妙构思的情节、生动活泼的语言及蕴含着的深刻社会现实批判意义来取胜的。
