Recently, the writer participated in the “Guangdong Province English Teaching and Internet International Academic Seminar” sponsored by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province and the British Consulate General in Guangzhou. One of the arrangements for the meeting was an English demonstration class where two teachers from both China and the United Kingdom used the Internet to teach. This article compares and analyzes these two lessons and draws some opinions to ask for advice. The content taught by Chinese teachers is SEFCBook 1A Unit 10 Lesson 38 TheOlympic Games. The whole class is like this: First, it introduced the founders of the Olympic Games and the English names of some sports. It involved water sports, ball games, track and field sports, etc. It also introduced the slogans of the games. Then, students read articles about ancient games from the Internet and answer questions. There are a total of five issues, including the time, location, nature, and competition of the ancient games, and whether women can participate in the games. Next is the introduction of modern sports games. Teachers divide students into three groups. Under the guidance of teachers, each group of students read the same article on the Internet (article given by the teacher). After reading, students discuss and exchange the information they have obtained and report the results to the class. In the end, the teacher produced five questions about China hosting the 2008 Olympic Games and asked students to discuss the answers.
