The Moonstone is one of two notable works by Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) of the 19th century British writer - the other is The Woman in White, Often regarded as the founding master of Western modern detective novels. Eliot’s preface is mainly about artistic analysis and evaluation of Collins’s creation, and focuses on the close relationship and interaction between Collins and Dickens, as well as their own creative features. Psalmist Thomas S. Eliot (1888-1965) is a modernist born in the United States after the British nationalist. He wrote poetry, wrote scripts, but also wrote a lot of literary criticism articles. Letting a modernist poet analyze a detective story is a very interesting thing in itself. What’s more, Eliot’s essay on Dickens, Collins and detective novels is indeed incredibly original. This article is based on the 1975 edition of Oxford University Press, “Moon Gems,” a book translated.
