双语教学是指能在学校里用第二语言进行各门学科的教学(英国朗曼出版社出版的《朗曼应用语言学词典》)。中国学者将其延伸为:将学生的第二语言,通过教学和环境,经过若干阶段的训练,使之能代替,或接近母语的表达水平。《朗曼应用语言学词典》对双语教学的形式进行了归纳:
Bilingual teaching refers to teaching a variety of subjects in a second language at school (Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics, published by Longman Press, England). Chinese scholars extend it to include the second language of a student, through teaching and the environment, through several stages of training, so as to enable it to replace or to approach the level of expression in the mother tongue.
