传统回指观解决回指语的选择(发话人视角)或回指释义(受话人视角)问题。这对回指语功能的解释并不完备。本文在传统回指观的基础上提出回指语的概念重现观,认为回指语的根本功能是要在回指语所在的位置(包括句法位置和心理位置)重现与先行语所激活的概念相关的某一明确的概念,而同指关系的建立只是概念重现所必需的一个过程或手段。
