John Adams is America’s first vice president and second president. When Adams succeeded Washington’s presidency in 1797, the United States was in danger of breaking its relations with France. By the end of the year, the two countries were on the eve of a tense and explosive war. Common sense tells Adams, to win the war, you must have effective commander in chief. Many persuaded him personally to command the army, but he did not think he had the special military aptitude. Thinking of it, he thought that the first president, Washington, was the only commander who could arouse the aura of the United States and unite the people of the entire nation.
