Total urinary hydroxyproline (THP) is mainly derived from bone and is degraded by newly synthesized collagen. In the control case, its urinary excretion rate can be used as an indicator of bone turnover rate. For rapid assessment of response to treatment for early detection of osteolytic lesions and metabolic bone disorders, accurate urinary hydroxyproline assays must be used. The authors conducted the following two studies to investigate the effect of food control on urinary THP excretion: Study I To a normal male, a 26-year-old volunteer, given a controlled diet after a seven-day observation period.
