“It’s an explosion, just around the corner!” Chris Chianno first identified the explosion of a grenade and the pungent smell of gunpowder. He happened to be on a light ambulance about 50 yards from the blast point. The car is leaving the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in northern Mogadishu. Chris is one of the most experienced field surgeons in the world. At the moment, he is assuming the third mission entrusted to him by the Canadian Red Cross. 15 wounded and a body were escorted into an armed safety car. Chris drove straight to Cassini Hospital. It is the only hospital in the northern part of Mogadishu guarded and segregated by a huge iron gate - a safe area with order and relief in this beleaguered mess.
