水结碎石路面的主要施工方法,对於铺筑一些高级路面碎石层和沥青碎石路碎石层的操作来说是适用的。水结碎石路面是靠碎石的嵌挤(穿插)作用达到稳固,再经过洒水、碾压,并用小的碎石和石层填缝,就形成一层密实的表面。水和石层以及碎石所产生的石粉可处起胶结作用,增加路面的稳定。在交通量不大而又受投资限制的情况下,采用水结碎石路面是符合经济适用的原则的。同时,这种路面经过逐步改善,可以满足更高密度的行车需要。但是这种路面也有很多缺点,如它容易发生灰尘,表面很快地被磨损而需要经常的养护,因表面平整性不够而提高运输成本等等。
