Objective: To clarify the role of endogenous estrogen (E2) and growth factor (EGFR) in colorectal cancer and their relationship. Methods: The expression of endogenous E2, EGFR and PCNA in 48 colorectal cancers was detected by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The average percentage of positive cells was 41.1% in 29 (60.4%) patients with endogenous E2, which was negatively correlated with tumor lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). Overexpression of EGFR in 32 cases (66.7%) showed high PCNA proliferation index, and both had a positive correlation with lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). The percentage of endogenous E2 positive cells was negatively correlated with EGFR overexpression (P<0.05), and there was a positive correlation between EGFR and PCNA expression (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Colorectal cancers with a small number of endogenous E2 negative or positive cells are greatly affected by growth factors. They have strong proliferative and proliferative capacity and are prone to invasive metastasis.
