扇子为人类日常生活经常使用的一种器物,古今中外皆有,司空见惯,无足为奇。但是,我国的扇子在其演进过程中,于实用一途外,又沾染文学、渗浸书画,蔚成独具特色的民族艺术文物之一,意义不凡。中国人用扇始自何时,实已无从确考。就文献记载来看,最迟在尧时已有所谓“箑”,又有称“翣”,后始称“扇”。“箑”字从竹,“扇”字、“翣”字从羽,可见起初是由竹子和羽毛制成。这种“羽扇”,就是我国最早的扇子,大约出现在殷代。据《古今注》记载:“羽扇起自殷高宗”。周时,武王玄览,造扇于前,此应为障扇,大概以竹编成。最迟在晋代已有团扇、纨扇之类的器物了。
