该枪是在柯尔特公司模块化、多回径的CM901半自动步枪基础上研制而成的,发射7.62×51mm NATO弹。与原型CM901相比,SP901加长了护手长度,导气箍位置也适当前移;将叉形消焰器改为鸟笼形消焰器;握把样式也做了改进。该枪机匣顶部及护手四周均设有皮卡河尼导轨,便于安装多种附件;除可使用光学瞄具外,也可使用机械瞄具,且机械瞄具采用折叠式设计,不影响瞄准镜的使用。为便于左撇子射手使用,其机匣左右两侧均设有保险手柄。
