Permco Inc. of the United States has developed a new structure of the gear pump. This gear pump uses a radial pressure-balanced splitter side plate, as shown in Figure 1. There is a pressure communicating groove on the circumference of the side plate with a pressure acting area on the suction side of the pump. It draws the pump output pressure from the tooth chamber near the suction port, which acts as a force to counteract the bearing load, see Figure 2. Permco company found that this force can reduce 30 to 35% of the bearing load. In bench tests up to 280 bar, the results were satisfactory.
