秉志,字农山,原姓翟佳氏,曾用名翟秉志,翟际潜。满族。1886年生于河南开封,1965年卒于北京。1902年考入河南大学堂,1903年考中举人。1904年由河南省政府选送入京师大学堂。1909年考取第一届官费留学生,赴美国留学,进入康乃尔大学农学院,在著名昆虫学家J.G.倪达姆(Needham)指导下学习和研究昆虫学。是第一位获得美国博士学位的中国学者。1918—1920年,在美国韦斯特解剖学和生物学研究所,跟著名神经学家H.H.唐纳森(Donaldso)从事脊椎动物神经学研究两年半。1920年回国,是中国近代生物学的主要奠基人,中国第一个生物学系和第一个生物学研究机构的创办人,中国
