The price of garlic(大蒜) has shot up this year in China,in part due to an unexpected factor —— a popular belief that it can help fight A(H1N1) flu. Speculation(投机)in garlic is more profitable than either real estate or stocks at the moment.
According to China Daily, garlic prices in Jinxiang,Shandong province,China’s garlic-growing capital,have risen more than 50 times since last October,when the wholesale market price hit a low of 0.15 yuan a kilogram. Garlic is trading at more than 8 yuan a kilogram on the market.
Restaurants are already cutting their garlic use. “The boss said we cannot afford to give too much now,” a waitress at the Tumen BBQ restaurant in Shanghai said.
Soaring garlic prices are creating a fever among speculators. The media reports that wealthy coal-mine bosses and real estate speculators are both gambling (赌博) on garlic in the hopes of making huge profits. In Jinxiang,local banks and cash machines have found themselves running out of money as speculators withdraw cash to buy garlic.
The soaring prices have created many millionaires. China Daily reported that a garlic trader had bought a 300-square-metre house with his profits.
Falling garlic prices last year have contributed to a shortage,with many farmers discouraged from planting the crop again. But analysts say there is strong evidence of market hoarding (囤积) and speculation.
Jerry Lou of Morgan Stanley,who has written a research piece on the problem,says that speculators are trying to store as much supply as possible and bid up prices.
But Jinxiang officials deny hoarding and speculation is the cause for the high price,saying the huge gap between supply and demand this year is to blame. They also say some people buy garlic because they believe garlic can create immunity from A (H1N1).
In Hangzhou,Zhejiang province,one high school bought more than 180 kilos of garlic for students to eat at lunch to improve their immune systems. But health authorities say there is no scientific proof that it could prevent A (H1N1) flu.
Having seen the high garlic price,many farmers are considering increasing garlic-planting areas. Higher production would cause the price to go down,fears Li Jingfeng,head of Jinxiang Garlic Association,CCTV reported.
