要不要使用母语,如何使用母语,教学法上的两大派历来争论激烈。语法翻译法主张依靠母语,充分使用翻译;直接法则完全排除母语,认为翻译只是在高级阶段需要研究的艺术;视听法虽主张在母语与外语两种语言结构对比的基础上选出典型句型作为教材中心,但它不赞成引导学生进行母语与外语两种语言的比较,也不主张使用翻译。以上几种教学法对待母语的态度都有失偏颇。他们片面强调母语的有利因素和不利因素,这不利于公外英语教学中科学地把握母语的使用。
