粤北山区的始兴县传颂着“村村有围楼,有(无)围不成村”这样一句谚语。凡到过始兴的人,无论走到那一个乡村都会看到该村的村边建有一座四层或五层高的、风格独特的围楼,当地的人们俗称它叫“炮楼”。始兴的围楼大小不一,各有千秋。有小巧玲珑,占地面积才十二平方米的正方形围楼;有气势磅礴的占地面积达一万二千多平方米的长方形围楼;还有椭园形的夯土筑成的围楼和上大下小的泥土砖围。这些围楼的外墙牢固坚实,用青火砖或河卵石一砌到顶,顶部
