为了满足更大容量和新业务不断增长的需要，在未来１０年数字系统技术必定发展。现在投入使用的第二代ＴＤＭＡ数字蜂窝系统将满足蜂窝通信今后的发展需要。在未来的５～１０年间，容量将会有很大的改进，并补充更多的特性。当蜂窝系统到达宽带业务这一关头时，它们便要由能支持那些需要不同带宽的多媒体应用的第三代系统来取代。作者叙述了数字蜂窝系统发展中产生的要求，讨论ＣＤＭＡ和ＴＤＭＡ的适用性，并提出关于下一代系统的工作的某些见解。
In order to meet the increasing needs of larger capacity and new services, digital system technology is bound to develop in the next 10 years. The second generation of TDMA digital cellular systems now in operation will meet the future development needs of cellular communications. In the next 5 to 10 years, capacity will be greatly improved, and add more features. When cellular systems arrive at the dawn of broadband services, they will have to be replaced by third-generation systems that can support multimedia applications that require different bandwidths. The authors describe the requirements that have arisen in the development of digital cellular systems, discuss the applicability of CDMA and TDMA, and present some insights into the workings of next-generation systems.
