It has been clarified that puzzles contain several kinds of terpenoids such as nitoctone and utka alcohol, and diallylheptane compounds such as yakuchinone A, but the chemical composition of their seeds has almost not been studied. Therefore, the authors studied the composition of puzzle seeds produced in Guangdong Province, China. The Chinese-made zhizhi seeds (5.6 kg) were extracted with hot methanol, and the resulting methanol extracts were sequentially extracted with n-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, and 1-butanol. The β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and Nuteca were separated and identified from the n-hexane moiety.
