1拙书《张爱玲在美国——婚姻与晚年》出版之后,手中尚有少许研究中所得之资料,因顾及传记的流畅可读性,只能割爱,未能用上。另外,从开始至终结,拙书断断续续也写了十年,中间自有不少对张爱玲生平的感想,因原作用英文写,而西方严肃传记力求公允客观,很少容许作者发表个人感想,所以不知不觉将其排斥在正文外。再者,十年中访问了不少张爱玲的亲友,内中有些饶有趣味的经历,值得再写一章。但这批资料信息,杂七咕咚地拼成杂碎,章次凌乱,在所难免,好在此文读者大多是张迷,对她的点点滴滴,都会觉得弥足珍贵,因而来写这“外一章”。21984年,我已写了三章有关张爱玲的评论,但一本作家评传,通常总是以生平为首章,关于她生平,到80年代,前半生资料甚详,但她自1955年抵美国后之资料,相当缺乏。这些年中,她只有接受了两位中国人访问,多年来深居简出,很少与世人来往。1955年后很重要一部分,是她与美国丈夫赖雅之婚姻。
