溆浦县低庄公社莲山大队有枣园500亩。在“农业学大寨”群众运动中,坚持以路线为纲,在抓好粮食生产的同时,积极发展红枣生产,取得了一定成绩。1972年总产33万斤。去年总产55万斤,比1972年增产60%,比解放前增长11倍,向国家交售干枣1600担,收入35000元,买回了大批化肥、农药,促进了农业生产的发展。这个大队红枣生产的大发展开始于1958年。当时广大贫下中农在总路线精神的光辉照耀下,充分发挥人民公社“一大二公”的优越性,对原有100多亩零星野生枣树进行了残林改造和补植,并扩大新林300多亩,建立了500多亩集中连片的枣林基地。枣树适应性强,山上山下都能栽植,红壤黄壤都能生长,而且耐旱、耐冻,二、三年便可见成效。大队组织专业队伍采取深挖整地、粮枣间作、培土施肥、选育良种、防治病虫害等措施,有效地提高了单位面积产量。单产由原来的60—80斤提高到100—200斤。
