雕塑是一门实体与空间艺术。对其实体与空间的处理，各民族之间有着不同的方式，有的注重对自然的模写，有的着意于宗教神性的刻画，有的突出主观情感的表现，等等这些，是由于人们的宗教信仰、审美趣味的不同而产生了观念上的差异，从而形成各自的表现形式。而雕塑的目的是为了表达人们的精神追求。为什么古今中外的雕塑艺术作品，无论年代多么久远，仍然能够震撼我们的心灵，唤起我们的情感共鸣，是因为艺术家以不同的形式赋予作品以强大的精神力量。这种内在的精神力量也就是雕塑的生命与灵魂。
