The Nigerian national news organization has devised a code of conduct: the Journalism Ethics Act. The following eight guidelines are set out in this code of conduct: 1. The public’s own judgment as to the truth. Only the correct coverage can lay the groundwork for the correct journalism to win the trust of the people. Second, every journalist’s moral obligation is to follow the fact that what he wants to publish or provide for a publication can only be the truth and the best news he knows about it. Third, the responsibility of journalists is merely to publish the facts; the fact that he knows should never be concealed; and the facts must not be distorted or falsified according to his or any other person’s will. 4. Apart from obtaining reasonable salaries and allowances earned in the performance of his duties, journalists should refuse to receive any bounty resulting from the publication or concealment of news or commentary. 5. When collecting news, reporters should use all reasonable means to ensure that they have free access to the rights of the interviewees at any time and should pay due attention to private secrets.
