京剧中的行当角色分工精细。在生、旦、净、丑四大基本行当之下又有若干细致分工。旦行分工尤其细致。正旦(青衣)多是扮演大家闺秀:花旦多为扮演小家碧玉;武旦表现的是侠义,勇武的女子:老旦即扮演老年妇女。从京剧的发声规律来讲,表演男性(生净丑)多用大嗓(真声),表现女性(旦角)多用小嗓(假声)。其中只有两个例外:一是生行中的小生,发声用小嗓,二是旦行中的老旦发声用大嗓。这是京剧艺术为区分人物的不同年龄特点所设置的两种反规律发声方式。在生活中青年妇女与老年妇女说话
