Objective To investigate the clinical application of peripheral central venous catheter (PICC) in the nutrition of low birth weight infants. Methods 48 cases of low birth weight infants admitted to our hospital from October 2013 to December 2015 were selected as the experimental group and all received PICC intravenous nutrition support. 50 cases of low birth weight infants admitted to the same period as the control group, were used peripheral vein catheterization line nutrition support treatment. The two groups were compared in terms of retention time, primary catheter success rate and complications during catheterization. Results The duration of catheterization in the test group was (18.6 ± 3.4) days, and the success rate of primary catheterization was 97.9% (47/48). The control group had a retention time of (4.2 ± 1.7) days and a primary catheterization success rate of 80.0% (40 / 50). The retention time of the experimental group and the success rate of a catheterization were better than the control group (P <0.05). The incidence of complications in experimental group was lower than that in control group during treatment (P <0.05). Conclusion PICC has a lower incidence of complications and a longer retention time in patients with low birth weight. The clinical effect is satisfactory.
