怀化学院艺术设计系是从原怀化学院美术系设计专业发展而来的一个系,1993年开始招生。有本、专科二个专业层次,设有平面设计、环境艺术设计、摄影艺术专业方向、产品造型与礼品、玩具设计专业方向、设计教育专业方向五个专业方向,在籍学生900余人。现有在岗教职工28人,其中专任教师23人,行政教辅人员5人,特聘教师5人；职称结构为：教授2人,副教授3人,讲师5人,助教6人,教师7人。他们之中有2人分别任湖南省设计艺术家协会理事及湖南省美术家协会理事,1人任湖南省教育厅艺术教育委员会委员,1人任湖南省设计教育委员会委员,1人为中国美术家协会会员、怀化地区美术家协会主席,4人为湖南省设计艺术家协会会员,5人为湖南省美术家协会会员,2人获批ICAD国际商业美术师协会B级设计师资格,还有教师先后担任“2004湖南中医药现代化博览会”、“2004国际杂交水稻与世界粮食安全论坛”设计总监等。教师们通过参加全国各类大型学术交流活动及设计展览、设计赛事,以及组织各种专题性的研讨会取得了一系列的成果,据不完全统计：有50多篇学术论文在国家级、海外、省级专业刊物上发表,有100余件设计作品参加各类设计大展,多件设计作品获银奖、铜奖、优秀奖。此外,他们还广泛参与大型项目的设计与施工,积累了与市场接轨的可贵经验,形成了颇有影响和极具实力的设计梯队和良好的科研攻关传统,大量设计作品被政府机关、企业团体及个人采用,在设计界具有较高的知名度。 设计系在办学过程中,一方面注重硬件条件的建设,配置有图形设计用计算机200台、图形工作站一套、非线性编辑系统一套及广告摄影棚、多媒体教室、设计制作室、雕塑室、图形输出室、装饰材料展示库等相应条件；另一方面十分注重提高教学质量,加大教学改革力度,使设计教学与社会实践相结合,不断培养应用型人才,使他们具备较强的能力,毕业的学生已在上海、北京、深圳、广东、浙江等地创办设计公司和工作。近年来该系实施的省级教改项目“面向21世纪、培养高素质、复合型、多能一专的美术教育、艺术设计人才的探索与实践”获湖南省教育厅教学成果i等奖、学院二等奖。2003、9月该系获批为国际商业美术师协会ICAD职业资质定点培训考试机构,显示出与国际接轨的、开放式的、具有职业资格的办学特色。
