从一般意义上讲,晋商重商轻官,以经商的成功而不是做官的成功作为人生进取的目标。但是,晋商的“官念”决没有这么简单。事实上,晋商对于“官”的态度极复杂微妙又矛盾统一。商与官的关系是晋商文化中的几个耐人寻味的关系之一。有重商轻官,有弃官从商,有结交官员,有花钱捐官,晋商始终徘徊在官与商之间,与“官”的关系剪不断,理还乱。可以说,这个关系处理得好的时候就是晋商发展得比较顺利的时期,而处理得不好的时候往往就是晋商陷入危机,走向衰败的时期。在那样一个大的文化背景下,晋商的“官念”既在一定程度上突破了中国传统文化官本商末的局限,又不可能不或浓或淡地带上传统文化的浓厚色彩。晋商与官的关系模式大致可以概括为以下几种:
