American International Machinery Corporation developed a cableless telephone for use in rural areas. This “Ultraphone” device works just like a cellular phone. The device sends voice to a conversion station as far as 38 km, and the conversion station transmits the conversation over a conventional telephone system, enabling 4 simultaneous calls on one radio channel. The Federal Communications Commission is experimenting with this system in Glendo. With the introduction of trials, telephone companies are more likely to bring such telephone services to remote locations because they are laying or installing cables.
