This article discusses the technical specifications achieved by high-and medium-speed diesel engines for West German locomotives and important economic characteristics such as fuel consumption rates. It describes the latest developments in hydraulics and the current level of development of three-phase traction technology. Mechanical components have also played a considerable role in the improvement of railway productivity, and modern bogies and braking devices have been described. The article also describes the control of diesel locomotives. By applying computer technology, this area offers tremendous potential to further increase efficiency and reduce costs, thereby making railway productivity improvements a big step forward. Diagnostic systems, remote control systems and automation devices are opening up new prospects for the development of locomotives. The last section of the article also gives some examples of modern diesel locomotives and their basic technical parameters.
