Acid α-naphthyl acetate esterase(ANAE)activity was used todemonstrate T lymphocytes in paraffin-embedded gastrointestinal tissuesand perigastric lymph nodes,one or more reddish-brown dots could berecognized in the cytoplasm of T lymphocytes,diffuse reddish-brownANAE products were also present in the cytoplasm of macrophages,epithelial and glandular cells.B lymphocytes were ANAE negative.Itwas demonstrated that ANAE cytochemical staining technique could beused to differentiate T lymphocytes.This method is simple and easy tocarry out in most hospitals.The percentage of T lymphocytes in essentially normal gastric mucosawas about 9.8% There was no significant difference in fundi andantra.The intraepithelial cells were located at the bottom of epithe-lial cells.In lamina propria T lymphocytes were distributed near the ba-sal layer of the epithelium.This might be related to the perception ofantigenic stimulation and regulation of immunologic reaction.
