从互文性的文学本原论、文学创作论、文学批评论到文学发展论,在刘勰文学批评中,互文性问题具有重要性和普遍性。他所说的文学是一个文本与各种前文本组成的世界。圣人法像自然物象而创作的书面文本《五经》既是文学最源初的原始形态,也是创作者的本源、最高价值尺度。文学创作活动本质上是一种摹仿经籍的行为,互文性是文本生成的内在机制,也是文学自身内在的演变规律,更是文学外部发展演变的规律,真正的互文性源自创作者凭借自己独特的个性特征对前文本所作的改变。
