定时系统的首要任务是提供一公共时间基准,籍以使所有的靶场测量在时间上相互关联。其次,是提供一种按一定时间顺序或在时间上同步地控制设备的手段。时间控制任务分为粗、精两种程序。粗程序只保证在某一项目的范围内所需的时间上的一致。精程序用于弹道摄影机旋转快门之类设备的精确同步,以及对必须准确地按预定时间动作的装置进行脉冲序列控制。属于后者的有弹道摄影机抓片快门、曳光管闪光点火、经纬仪的快门和卷片机构和发射前计时装置。时间相关信息可以顺序地以某种二进制编码形式记录到胶片或磁带上,或以某种光点形式投射在记录材料上。从使用观点说来,定时系统的主要要求是精确、可靠和无工作故障。
