1942年8月苏联国防部获悉德军正在制造一种新型重型坦克,为有效应对未来的敌人威胁,苏联人在KV-85重型坦克原有基础上,由车里雅宾斯克坦克厂设计处开发出一种装有85毫米口径坦克炮和厚重装甲的新式重型坦克,它被以当时苏联武装力量最高统帅约瑟夫·斯大林的名字命名,简写为JS。但是在之后的战斗中人们发现新型坦克的火力不足以克制德军“虎”式坦克的强大威力。
In August 1942, the Soviet Defense Ministry was informed that the Germans were manufacturing a new type of heavy tank. To effectively deal with the threat of future enemies, the Soviets developed from the original design of the KV-85 heavy tank by the design office of the Chelyabinsk Tank Factory A new heavy tank with a 85mm tank gun and heavy armor, named after JS Stalin, the then supreme commander of the Soviet armed forces. However, in the ensuing battle, people discovered that the firepower of the new tank was not sufficient to restrain the mighty force of the German “Tiger” tank.
