During the course of feeding CeCl3 to Wistar rats, the temporal changes of cerium content in cytosol and membrane of erythrocytes were determined by proton induced X-ray emission method. The results showed that the cerium species can penetrate the barriers in digestive duct and erythrocyte membrane into the cells, and the increased intracellular levels of calcium and chloride and the decreased phosphorus level along with the entry of cerium are also revealed. It suggests the cerium species affect the permeability of erythrocyte membrane, and the intracellular cerium promotes the hydrolysis of phosphate diester bonds of the phorsphates, such as 2, 3-DPG, etc. The mechanisms of across-membrane transport of cerium are also discussed.
