M252 81mm mortar is a modification of the British L16. The model was established in 1984 and put into battle four years later. The M252 is replacing the older M29 Series 81mm mortars in the light infantry battalion. The United States Army also uniquely considered that it would also replace 81-mm and 107-mm mortars mounted on the mechanized tracked personnel carriers but also required them to reach the level of the 120-mm mortars of the earlier M285 series stereotyped in Israel.
