OBJECTIVE: To compare the depressive symptom scores of cancer patients before and after radiotherapy, and find the risk factors leading to the higher scores. METHODS: Tumors of 126 patients undergoing radiotherapy were compared longitudinally, and the changes of SDS score before and after chemotherapy were compared. Results: SDS score was the same in 3 (2.38%) patients before and after treatment. SDS score was higher in 77 (61.11%) patients than before treatment, while 46 (36.51%) patients had lower SDS score after treatment than before treatment. The average age is small (20-29 years old), elderly or receiving head and neck radiotherapy patients prone to fatigue, anxiety and gastrointestinal symptoms. Conclusions: First-time radiation therapy increases depression scores in patients, but is not the only factor.
