OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of VEGF, p53 and p21ras in primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and their correlation with pathological grading and metastatic behavior of HCC. Methods: The expression of VEGF, p21ras and p53 in 34 cases of HCC were studied by immunohistochemical S-P method. Results: The positive rates of VEGF, p21ras and p53 in hepatocellular carcinoma and paracancerous tissues were significantly different (P<0.01). There was a significant positive correlation between the expression of VEGF and p21ras and p53 (P<0. 01). The synergistic expression among the three was also related to pathological grade and metastatic behavior of HCC, but not to tumor size, AFP level, HBsAg positive. Conclusion: VEGF may act synergistically with p53 and ras genes in the formation, development and metastasis of HCC. The synergistic effect of these three factors may be related to the pathological grade and metastatic behavior of HCC.
