More and more Americans recognize that cultural diversity is essential as a multicultural country. Despite the many controversies over the significance of multiculturalism and development, such a controversy is itself a manifestation of freedom and democracy. No matter how scholars answer it, the question of why Americans with different ancestry and cultural traditions become “Americans” lies at the core of the relationship between ethnic pluralism and national integration. Of course, while studying and exploring the cultural diversity of the United States, we must also pay attention to the fact that the American nation as a whole has a high degree of identity with the basic value system of all ethnic groups, and that “one body” is greater than “pluralism.”
