Internet上包含无数有价值的多媒体和技术资料。不少是免费或低价提供视频、音频和动画的实时播放是用户的急切要求,就目前的带宽和所用Modern而言,实时播放数字化电影、转播维也纳新年音乐会或NBA总决赛是不可能的,许多程序允许免费或低价下载,但是下载的时间令人望而生畏,产生速度瓶颈的重要原因之一就是Modern。目前国内外常用的Modern传输速度是14.4kb/s或28.8kb/s。如果将计算机和已经在家庭内安装的有线电视电缆相连接,情况就会完全改观。数据吞吐速度可以达到27MB/s,即相当于28.8kb/s的100倍。这时,实时播放视频和音频就不会再出现延迟问题了。
