上世纪初蔡元培提出“以美育代宗教”的主张,将艺术提到拯救人类灵魂的高度,要以宗教家的心肠、哲学家的识见和教育家的手段将芸芸众生超拔到艺术美的天堂之中。百年梦醒,人们由天堂的憧憬堕入尘世的实际,困惑也就紧随而来。生当今日,我们似乎既看不到宗教的庄严,也看不到艺术的神圣。耳闻目睹的,不是在宗教名义下出现的种族战争、恐怖袭击和自残自毁事件,就是在艺术名义下实施的种种令人作呕的怪诞行为。单从这一点来看,蔡先生的“以美育代宗教”之说在现世仍然可行,因为宗教与艺术在另一种新的意义上形成

From this point of view alone, Mr. Cai’s “Aesthetic Education instead of Religion” theory is still practiced in the world because religion and art form in another new sense
