关于先秦儒学后来是否演变成为宗教的问题,国内学术界还在讨论。本文认为:儒家虽然主张神道设教,但它本身只是讲道德伦理的教化作用,并没有形成宗教信仰。汉代的谶纬神学,虽然一度想将儒学宗教化,奉孔子为教主,但没有成功。朱熹的理学虽有不少佛老思想,但主要是吸取其中的哲理为儒家的伦理哲学作论证。他要人们在世俗生活中达到一种超世俗的精神修养境界,却形成不了宗教性的精神王国。总的趋势,他不是把儒学引向宗教化,而是吸取宗教的哲理,从而把儒家的伦理教义导向哲理化。朱熹宣扬的虽然是精巧形态的信仰主义,但毕竟不是世俗的宗教。
