Stream of consciousness marks the Western novels, literary concepts, philosophical thinking from realism to modernism. Joyce’s greatest achievement is to make a great contribution to the development of the stream of consciousness novels. In the early stages of his writing, he used mental insight to describe life without criticism and without comment, so that readers in the “Dublinians” felt that he had a direct connection with the life described in the book. In “The Portrait of a Young Artist,” stream of consciousness techniques such as sensory impressions, free association, and inner monologue are more widely used, and characters’ thoughts and actions appear to have been created by an invisible, apathetic creator. The article focuses on the connection between the stream of art of consciousness and the theme of the text, and expounds the deduction and deepening of the theme of the art form.
