因长期在大山里生活,土家人便特制了运输工具:背篓。背篓用竹制成,上圆下方。两边装有背系。分二斗背,三斗背,五斗背,扁花背,脚背篓,植背。二斗背,三斗背和五斗背一般用来背粮食。扁花背一般用来背贵重的物品和出门。脚背篓一般用作背钝重的物品,楂背一般用作背轻便的东西。土家人就是用背篓背走了一个又一个时代。随着时代的发展,山里通了公路,有了汽车,大大地减轻了土家人的负担,但土家人并没有就此扔掉山背篓。
