漳州种植香蕉至今已有一千多年历史.唐代漳州别驾丁儒在《归闲诗十二韵》中载有“芭蕉金剖润 龙眼玉生津”.1983年漳州地区种植香蕉面积2.4万亩,年产香蕉果17500吨,超历史最高水平.外销上海、杭州、北京等地7000吨.目前漳州地区种植香蕉的主要品种是“天宝蕉”和“台湾蕉”,约占总面积的70%.“台湾蕉”亦称“台蕉”是五十多年前由台湾引入.曾为国宴佳品的“天宝蕉”是七百多年前从印度引进后选出的优良变种,具有色艳、味香、质甜、果大、肉丰等优良品质.
