红豆树(Ormosia hosiei Hemsl et wils),豆科乔木型慢生长寿树种,在江苏为落叶乔木。树高一般6—10米,其最具观赏价值的,是它的果实。每年9-10月果熟,每荚内有种子1—2粒,色泽鲜红,光彩夺目,种皮坚硬,不怕虫蛀,存储百年而色泽不变,是首饰上镶嵌装饰之珍品。更有人以为吉祥之物,视作爱情的信物,友谊的象征,故又有“相思子”之名。唐代诗人王维的咏红豆诗:“红豆生南国,春
